Metamorphic Interview
“I’m not a real rock star. I haven’t trashed a hotel room yet”
Within the last year, our coverstar, Metamorphic, has morphed from an underground artist into a global superstar. From her big win at 2010 Rock awards to her debut album going platinum, there is no doubt that 2011 will be epic for Metamorphic. In January, we had a chat with one of rock’s leading women to find out some of her most personal thoughts and what she thinks truly defines a “rock star”.
So, you’ve been fairly successful within the last year but what was the highlight for you?
I’d have to say that there hasn’t really been a highlight; I mean so many good things happened. For one I got signed to an epic record label, Hopeless Records, I got No. 1 on the UK Charts, which is pretty surprising since not many alternative or rock singles make it to the top spot since the industry is filled with Britney and Kesha wannabes! But back to the question at hand, I would also say that all the awards have been a highlight especially the Rock Awards, that was pretty epic.
Cool. What does it feel like being signed to Hopeless Records?
It’s pretty damn cool. Like the coolest thing ever. It’s really tough because there is a lot of pressure and therefore a LOT of work to do but if you work hard enough then it’s nothing that you can’t deal with. It’s just cool to know that they’ve already worked with such massive rock stars, it’s epic. Gives me something to aspire to.
But you’re already a rock star...
I’m not a REAL rock star. I haven’t trashed a hotel room yet. That’s on my list of things to do this year. But in all seriousness, I don’t think I am a rock star yet, I mean I’m not legendary. I’m relatively new to the music business. I mean, everything that has happened to me has been an accident. Give it 30 years when I’m a granny with a guitar, and then I could confidently say that I’m a rock star.
Well you certainly are modest. Tell us, recently Taylor Momsen made a pretty rude comment about your debut album, how did you respond to that?
When I found out I didn’t really give a damn to be honest. She just made herself look like a bitch so she’s already been punished. I have always been such a great fan of hers, so I was surprised but of course, she didn’t know that I admired her. It’s just one more person I won’t have in my life. I’m so sick of haters and recently there has been an increase in the amount of people hatin’. But haters gonna hate, you just gotta keep strong and do what you’re doing. If more people hate me then I must be doing something right!
That is a very wise saying! We heard that you’re a big supporter of gay/lesbian rights, what made you support this?
Well everybody is equal and therefore everybody should have the same rights. Just because you’re different doesn’t mean that you should be mistreated, everybody deserves happiness and I feel really strongly about that. I have so many mates who are gay/lesbian/bi and they are awesome. We live in the 21st century so I don’t see why people act as if we are in the stone age.
Let’s talk about your debut album “Confessions of a Confused Alcoholic”. What would you say was personally your favourite track?
I like them all of course, but I would have to say “Save Me”. It’s a track that I enjoyed working on and I spent the longest on it. When you can spend a long time working on one song and not get bored then you know it’s gonna be a gem. This track was actually close to my heart, I mean the inspiration came from my own personal experiences. I left my parents’ house at a young age and I didn’t really have anywhere to go. I felt like I was going under so when writing my album this track really just helped to vent my emotions, it was emosh.
You mentioned earlier on that you felt that the UK Charts were filled with Britney and Kesha wannabes. What effect do you think it has had on yourself and the fellow rock community?
Well ultimately, I really feel that some really good music has been overlooked. I mean the music industry has become over commercialised. Everybody is using autotune! I mean if you can’t sing and overuse autotune, then you’re kinda lying to the people that listen to your music. I guess autotune is OK but just to a certain extent. Too much is just bad. But anyway, people who actually take the time to learn how to play instruments are not getting enough credit, it’s going out to those who lipsync etc. It’s sad but it’s the truth.
FRONT COVER PHOTOSHOOT
The first few images come out unfocused and in a weird light, so I changed this by changing the lighting setting on the camera. This pretty much solved the problem. After this I got my model "Metamorphic" to do some canting, a usual pose used by iconic female rockstars such as Hayley Williams. If I could change certain aspects of the shoot, I would've taken more pictures of my model to give myself a larger selection of photos to choose from.
